About Earl!

Paz, Kathy
For those who live outside of Vieques, Earl passed by 100 miles to the North
and hit us with lots of wind but not at hurricane force.  Some trees are
down.  A silly sailboat of about 45-50 feet came into Esperanza yesterday
and was washed ashore near Cayo de Tierra during the storm.  Our phones are
not working.  Tropical Storm Fiona looks like it will pass us by 250 miles
to the north tomorrow evening – not too much of a worry.

Hurricane Earl

Well folks, it appears to be official that Hurricane Earl will hit Vieques sometime on Monday.  As you can imagine, preparing for the storm includes things like getting gas, filling up extra water jugs and the like.  The problem today is that the gas ran out about 7am and we have been out of water for almost two days.  It is a really good thing that the Medalla store was full or there may have been riots.  So, the only way to follow the national weather service instructions to prepare for the storm is to drink, drink often and drink a lot.  (under Puerto Rico law, alcohol sales will cease when we reach the hurricane warning level; horror of all horrors)
Speaking of drinking, Al's Mar Azul was packed last night for the last karaoke under Al and Val's ownership.  Dan, the new owner, was in attendance.  From all reports, the Mar Azul will maintain it's waterfront dive status.  The bar will be closing for a bit to allow the new owners to get settled in.
Yesterday at Red Beach, a farewell party was held for Coqui Fire Jimmy.  Of course, his flight is scheduled for Monday, so it looks like there will be another going away party for him since he obviously will not be leaving.
The Next Course re-opens on Friday night.  Yay!!!!
A quick bridge update:  There are quite a few people voting in favor of the bridge.  Not the bridge to the main island, but the bridge on the middle road.  This one has been out for weeks.  The general consensus is that we would like to see them practice rebuilding this bridge before starting on something bigger.  Meanwhile, rumor has it that our new passenger boat with a 750 person capacity is somewhere in San Juan.  This will certainly help with getting more people here, it will not, however, help with the gas thing.  Unless...... each passenger is required to bring a gallon of gas.  With 4 trips per day, that's 3000 gallons.  Might work.

Results of the mock Bridge Referendum- and still there's struggle

GOOGLE TRANSLATION of Rogelio's Press Release
Bridge triumphs in mock referendum in Vieques by Rogelio Figueroa

Vieques, Saturday August 21, 2010 - The alternative of building a bridge
between Ceiba and Vieques overwhelmingly won the mock referendum held today
in the island municipality of Vieques. Of 695 people who attended the event,
convened by the Committee for Bridge Pa 'Vieques, 654 or 94.5% voted for the
construction of a bridge connecting the island municipality with Ceiba and
Puerto Rico, while the opposite alternative only received 38 votes or 5.5%.
In the activity, which lasted from 7:30 am to noon, residents of Vieques
voters could vote for or against the construction of that road.
Ernesto Peña, chairman of the Committee for Bridge Pa 'Vieques noted that
"the results confirm the feeling we've seen in the street, the large
attendance is what has surprised us. We expected about 300 people and nearly
700 attended Vieques. The untenable situation of shipping and the fact that
under the concept of Ecopuente, administration and profits would be in the
hands of communities, has created a renewed interest. "
Daly Avila, president of APRODEC welcomed the poll results Vieques and
stated that "the race for the Ecopuente has begun. The ceibeños are elated
by the success of our brothers Vieques driving a development proposal that
comes from the communities. Every day is clearer, communities and
cooperatives will be an important factor in the recovery and economic
development of Puerto Rico the 21st century. "
Rogelio Figueroa, president of Enercoop, for his part was "very encouraged"
by the results of this survey, according to "reflect the people of Vieques
that we already know from their determination to fight for what they
consider fair. A decade ago, joined with the rest of Puerto Rico and the
world to end the Navy bombing. Today, alongside the ceibeños, do it again,
to direct what will be one of the energy infrastructure projects and
highlights of this decade.
# # #
The Pro-Bridge group in Vieques held a mock referendum Saturday August 21,
in support of a bridge from Ceiba to Vieques. Rogelio Figueroa, of Enercoop,
has a proposal for an "eco-bridge" to Vieques (see the photo of the bridge
below). He has allied himself with the pro-bridge group in Vieques who put
on the mock referendum. Now this group and Rogelio are claiming that this
one-sided vote, basically taken at a rally held by the Pro-Bridge folks,
shows that 95% of the people of Vieques support the bridge. The majority of
the community in Vieques appears to be opposed to the bridge. In a public
hearing held in 2009, of the 21 people who testified, only one person,
Ernesto Pena, spoke in favor of the bridge. In recent days several
community leaders, including Ismael Guadalupe, Robert Rabin and Victor
Emeric have spoken out against the building any bridge (regular or
"eco-bridge").
I don't have the wordng of the mock referendum, but it appears to have been
worded for the bridge idea in general.

A letter...
Rogelio ... Daly ...
We believe that the current crisis and historical maritime transportation is
the priority for our community .. and spending half a million dollars for a
futuristic project does more harm than good to the reality ...
The community of Vieques has spent years fighting for a bridge ... this
topic came up recently as a desperate reaction to the horrible boat service
between Vieques and the Big Island ... .. and were raised at the meeting of
the Fort

What has taken decades is calling for the short route between Rompeolas and
Ceiba ... and that should be our priority ... also fighting for improvements
in service Vieques / Culebra / Fajardo / Ceiba ....

I am convinced that transport between the islands is a government
responsibility, just as light, water and education .... Conditions do not
exist in Vieques or Culebra for "cooperativación" a project of this
magnitude ...
The prospects for controlling the access of everyone and their mother (and
father) to Vieques once built a bridge are small... thus increasing
speculation in land, population displacement .... And the increase in the
evils associated with an increase in traffic ... pressures on space,
infrastructure, etc
I hope to continue this debate in a loving way and with all the frankness
and respect we all deserve ...
In struggle, in solidarity .... ...

The Bridge

According to my intel, the bridge vote was around 600 in favor, with 38 opposed.  These numbers represent less than 10 percent of the voters on the island, so it can be argued that it is not representational.  Anyway, this is simply the first baby step and I can assure you all that it won't be the last word.
Don't forget that the final karaoke night at Al's is this Saturday, the 28th.  I would suspect this to be a blow-out evening and should not be missed.  The new owners will be taking over sometime next week.  The blog will let you all know their plans.
Taste of the Islands was a huge success.  The W provided a beautifully organized event.
Tropical Storm Danielle is predicted to pass at least 900 miles to our north.  Nice.  Are watching some other weather coming off the Cape Verde Islands, but that is the norm for this time of year.  Keep you posted.

A Bridge Too Far

The outcome of the bridge vote is yet to be known, since the vote did not take place last week, but will tomorrow, supposedly.  According to one source, the city council gave out the wrong date.  How Vieques.  There has been much discussion regarding this bridge thing.  The most pointed comments refer to how will a structure of that magnitude be built when we can't seem to get a 50 foot bridge repaired so that the middle road can be used.  Good point, but when things start to make sense here it is probably time to leave.
On the upside of the transportation issue, the Vieques II, our passenger ferry, is back in action.  We have not seen her since the dawn of time and some folks claim to have fainted at the sight of her pulling into port.  It is now much easier to figure out which boat to get on in Fajardo.  (at least this week, but maybe not next week)
The winds have been straight out of the north lately, which makes for some flat calm seas on the south side.  In fact, Esperanza harbor looks like a pond.  The snorkeling has been excellent.  However, due to the time of year, the jellyfish population is also excellent.  It is a good idea to carry a bottle of ammonia with you just in case.  In a pinch, you can pee on yourself (this was discussed in an early What's Happening column) or you can pee on someone else, just make sure you know them.  On the north side, snorkeling at Mosquito Pier has led to some manatee sightings.  These sea creatures are so ugly they are cute and really fun to watch.
Coqui Fire Cafe closed it's doors last night for the final time.  Jimmy is speculating that at least one year will go by before the cafe re-opens.  There were lots of people there and lots of laughs.  Coconuts will be closing on September 6th and re-opening on October 5.  Trade Winds restaurant will be closing just after Labor Day weekend and will re-open for Columbus Day.  The guesthouse remains in operation.
Bananas is offering happy hour specials.  They have small appetizer plates for $3, $1.50 Medallas and a $3 drink special every day.  There is a rumor that the menu will be changing, but we have not seen any advance copy so far.  They do have hamburger sliders served on arepas, which are very good.  Duffy's, Lazy Jack's and Belly Buttons will be open all through storm season.  It is rumored that La Reina will also remain open for the next few months.  We all know that Chez Shack will not be open.
Road crews have been working on the Garcia Road, cutting back the brush along the sides.  This makes it seem like you can go faster.  DON'T.  There is a very large black bull in residence about 1.9 miles outside of Esperanza.  His head is larger than the hood of a suburban, so you can imagine what will happen if you get careless.
Will try again next week to update the bridge issue.

A Bridge to Paradise?

There has been some movement afoot in recent years to build a bridge between Vieqeus and the mainland.  Supporters use all the usual rhetoric of the economy and education.  Opponents says that the same thing can be accomplished with faster boats that carry both cars and passengers.  This Saturday is a rally/voting to determine how Vieques really feels about this issue.  Before everyone starts wigging out, remember that if a project is expected to take two years to complete, it will take at least 20 years here.  An example is the fifteen years we have been waiting for the Malecon to become a pedestrian pathway.  I'll let you know what happens.  (love this blog thing)
As I mentioned earlier, Hot Sauce Jimmy's (Coqui Fire) dad recently passed away.  Jimmy is returning to Tennessee for some time to take care of the businesses his dad left.  This means that Coqui Fire Cafe will be closing for an indefinite period.  This Saturday (14th) is Italian Night and they will be open the next Tuesday and Thursday, closing for good on the 19th.  The Hot Sauce division of Coqui Fire will NOT CLOSE.  Sauces will be produced as raw materials are available.  Very sad for us, but it is an exciting new chapter for Jimmy.
El Quenepo will be closing for the season on August 29th.  Hurry in to get your last fix of seafood ceviche.
Jim Starke mentioned the new Kash and Karry in an earlier blog.  This place is amazing.  Only here can you buy champagne and toilet paper in one stop.  If the rigors of shopping get to be too much, you can go right next door to the wine cave and sample some vintages.  Or, you can be like me and sample entire bottles.  They are going to be stocking specialty meats and cheeses in the near future.  Each week something new lands on the shelves.  At the risk of giving out too much information, they have solid white tuna in water. Don't tell too many people.  The Kash and Karry is open 8am to 8pm every day.

Some Updates

Chris and Beth at Buen Provecho have gone to summer hours.  They are open 12 noon to 4pm on Thursday, Friday and Saturday.  You can reach them for special closed day shopping by calling 787-529-7316.  Call only if you are going to buy something, looking doesn't count.
Casie and Buddy have closed The Next Course for the month of August.  They will re-open on September 3 with a slightly changed menu.  They will be adding some dishes in honor of storm season.
Taste of the Islands is the weekend of August 20.  For tickets call Roxana Ruiz at 787-721-0505.  This a hugely fun fundraiser.  Anything that benefits the kids of Vieques is worth it.  The location at the W promises to be just great.  If you are going to be on island, try to go.
The huge pothole between the Malecon and The Green Store has been filled in.  (You know the one that is (was) larger than a VW bug.)  It looks as though the repair will last through the weekend.  That makes Saturday night less dangerous to the front end of your car.
See, learning to blog.  More soon.

Tropical Storm Colin is Gone

Just having finished searching every NOAA weather site available, there is a collective sigh of relief as Colin dissipates and heads north of us.  Of course, the best barometer of storm activity is to watch the fisherman.  If they pull their boats, it's time to make sure there is enough Medalla in the house.
The last bout of rain left us with one broken bridge and some of the most enormous potholes I have ever seen.  Being from New England, that is quite a statement.  The road that runs through the middle of the island (you know I don't know the route #) is closed for bridge repairs.  This bridge is one that was repaired after TS Jeanne in 2005.  Although this is inconvenient, at the worst it makes the trip from Esperanza to the gas station 10 minutes longer.
The potholes, however, are another story.  These are ball joint crushing craters.  The best path when heading to Isabel from Esperanza is to hug the right side shoulder.  The problem, of course, is that on the return trip you need to take the same path.  You will know that the oncoming traffic is local if they don't drive into the ditch to avoid you.
The ferry is still in a state of flux.  We are getting both cargo and passenger service, but you never know what boat it is going to be.  Easy to figure out which one to get on in Vieques, in Fajardo, ask.  Boats are running fairly close to schedule.  This does not mean on time, just that they are running.
Today's insider food choice is Sushi Pizza at Coconuts.  I haven't had one of these babies for a few years.  It is fabulous! Unfortunately, they also have wine, which is why this blog is didn't happen last night.  Coconuts is open Friday thru Monday and is located in Isabel near the Ocean View Hotel.
My new goal is less wine and more blogging.  See you in a few.
