Restaurant Updates

We have a few updates for the dining community.  Hold onto your hats.

First, things at Coconuts have changed.  Chef Michael has moved on to the main island, so Alex and Glenn from Aguacate Catering have stepped in along with Beverly from Orquideas to chef.  Beverly closed her operation at Orquideas.  The nightime dining there is on demand.  You call Lazy Jack's and see if you can make a reservation.  Coconuts will be open Fri.-Tues. through the Labor Day Weekend.  It will reopen in October.

Coqui Fire is back.  For next month, Jimmy will be cooking dinner on the 9th and 23rd, on a first come first served basis,5-9pm, .  Brunch is the 28th at 10am.  Jimmy created some new sauces that are level 12 and 15.  They are fabulous, but do require extra sour cream if you go overboard.

Tradewinds has dropped Monday breakfast and lunch.  They are open seven nights for dinner and Saturday and Sunday for breakfast and lunch.  Duffy's, however, is going strong as usual with seven day operation beginning with lunch at 11am.

The small gas station is open again.  We are not sure exactly why it was closed.  Both stations are open and full of gas and there are no lines.  Presumably this is because just yesterday the price jumped significantly to $4.40 per gallon for premium.  The upside is that being on a small island, how much driving can you do?

The temperature update is still the same.  It is 80 degrees with a great breeze.  A few scattered showers, but all in all pretty perfect weather.

Fiesta Patronales

Patronales has arrived.  Areas around the plaza are filled with merry-go-rounds, tilt-a-wheels, a small ferris wheel and food and beverage booths.  The festivities begin this evening.  Bar Plaza looks almost ready for business.  There are new takeout windows for local fare.  We are unsure of exactly what they will be serving or the hours of regular operation, but it appears that the grand opening will be tonight.

With the parades, rides, vendors, games and music Isabel Segunda is a bit of a logistical nightmare with respect to vehicular traffic.  If you are staying in Bravos or Santa Maria it is not easy to get to points south and west.  From those barrios the best route is to take a right at Taverna Restaurant.  At the end of the street, turn left (Mar Azul will be dead ahead), bear left at the big clock and head past the second hand store, NU-2-U.  You will come to the main street, which you want to cross and go one short block.  Turn left.  You can continue straight or take any available right turn (watch for one ways!!!) which will bring you outside of town without having to try to work your way through the areas around the plaza.

To get home, first watch the clock.  You want to avoid running into any ferry arrivals and departures.  Take the highway to nowhere by the Vieques Fruit and Vegetable Market.  Take your second left and proceed to the end of the street.  Turn right.  When you get to the main street, go straight across and pass by the grocery store and Coconuts Restaurant.  Turn left and continue down past the ferry.  For Bravos you can go straight and go past the lighthouse, for Santa Maria take the right across from the terminal and go up the hill, at the intersection bear right.  At the end of the road take the left fork which brings you to the street heading out to Santa Maria and Santa Maria Playa.  The reason you want to avoid the ferry times is that the area by the terminal is jammed packed with cars, publicos and trucks, big trucks.

All the inconvenience aside, Patronales is really a fun time and everyone should go at least one night.

Sadly, a local man, Dave Dixon, passed away a few weeks ago.  Dave had lived on the island for about five years.  He took it upon himself to keep the basketball court in his neighborhood clean and usable for the local children.  He was passionate about his animals.  He was the guy that used to sit at a bar and suddenly belt out a country song or two.

Hot Sauce Jimmy has returned.  We kid him that he just wants another going away party.  He will be cooking some Coqui Fire Cafe nights at the Mar Azul..  When the dates are available, I'll let you know.

Patronales

As you all know, July is a month full of holidays and parties.  The biggest one of all is Patronales.  Traditionally, it is the celebration of our patron saint, but in modern day has turned into a carnival-country fair-concert that runs for five days beginning on Wednesday, July 13 at 6:30pm in town.  It finishes in the wee hours of Monday morning on the 18th.

There are rides for the younger set, face painting, balloons, ring toss, etc., etc.  There are a multitude of food vendors offering every conceivable puerto rican finger food imaginable.  And then there is the music.  The singers and bands cover all the bases from salsa to classical guitar, some reggetone and some rock and rock.  The music is loud and festive.  It is a really, really good time and one not to be missed if you are on the island.

Right in the heart of the Patonales festivities sits Bar Plaza.  The Bar Plaza burned several months ago and it was questionable whether it would be rebuilt.  Bar Plaza is the oldest gin mill on the island.  It is currently undergoing a rebuild process that we hope is finished or at least usable by the time the party begins.

One of the most amazing aspects of Patronales is the cleanup process.  The music often times goes to 4am, but somehow by the time the businesses are open at around 8am, the streets are clean and the trash cans have been emptied.  The staff in the sanitation department are to be commended.

A quick bridge note.  It is still out, but I checked this morning and after receiving a ridiculous amount of rain yesterday, the bridge is still where they built it.  It looks like a keeper folks.  Will let you know when the first car goes across it.

The Humane Society is desperately seeking people traveling to Hartford, CT on American Airlines who would be willing to help transport some animals.  The only responsibility you have is to meet the animals at the special pet check in area at the San Juan airport.  The shelter and the airline do all the rest.  It is important to note, that the shelter needs to know well in advance of your travel date and it must be midweek, except for Thursday.  Thursday is the day the cargo ferry handles hazardous materials and we cannot put animals on the boat that day.  The coordination of getting the animals from Vieques to San Juan international is fairly dicey.  The shelter has to find someone who has the time to accompany the animals and find a truck and driver on the main island that is able to spend the day transporting the animals to the airport and the volunteer (s) back to the ferry.  The animals must have health certificates that are current which requires an exam by a veterinarian, which we do not have on the island full time.  The volunteer has to be willing to be stranded on the main island if any step in the process gets delayed.  Sometimes animals get bumped and they have to be brought back to Vieques, which can require them to be smuggled into a hotel room or to billet on a nearby beach.  As you can see, getting these animals to new homes stateside requires more coordination than a space shuttle launch.  If you can help, call the shelter at 787-741-0209.
